How did you go about launching your business?
I did a lot of desk research about the industry knowing the trend for e-commerce was growing that is where I wanted to play as well as the traditional bricks and mortar store. I read a lot of articles about how to sell online and how to setup my website however, it is always a moving beast so I am still learning!
What has been one of the biggest challenges that you have faced since starting, and what have you learned from it?
With being a small business you need to complete the process from start to end so understanding how to order raw materials and where from as there is so much choice. I always had a criteria that I wanted to meet and a lot of trial helped me understand which ingredients suited the best for SophistiKate Australia. Also, trust your gut!
Have you had to adapt your business during COVID-19? If so, how?
As a combination selling between online and physical retail the markets were closed down in Sydney therefore loosing a selling footprint, we had to up our game online and concentrate on other physical retail options to succeed.
What makes SophistiKate Australia unique?
All our candles and diffusers are hand crafted from quality ingredients and made with so much love! We pour the maximum fragrance the wax can handle so that there is a stronger scent when burned/ diffused. Additionally, we have our own unique SophistiKate Australia jars and packaging which looks awesome in your home.
What advice would you give others who are wanting to start a small business?
Back yourself, you never know until you try!
What is/are your favourite scent(s) from your range?
My personal favourite of the SophistiKate range is bamboo and white lily it has a really fresh scent about it and slightly floral but really unique. I had over 80 candles at my wedding all with bamboo and white lily fragrance so it really lifted the room and created a romantic atmosphere, every time I light one in my home it reminds me of that day and the happy ever lasting memories we created.
Do you think it is important to support local businesses?
Definitely, as small businesses we are able to be agile and tailor products to customers needs not only does it create competition for the big players but provides unique and differentiated products to our happy customers. Additionally it also helps local economies and communities too.
